According to recent statistics, there are approximately 250,000 ACL tears per year. Most of these tears are repaired with surgery. Are we using outdated protocols? What is the value of an Accelerated Rehab? Also, how common is it post-surgically for pain control to be an issue. What about the current opioid crisis? Is there a better pain management alternative for our ACL patients? Laura Bray-Prescott, PT, LATC, ATC with the Shelbourne Knee Center discusses these questions and more. This course will cover:
-History and Evolution of ACL Treatment and Rehabilitation

Course Goals and Objectives:
At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:
- Identify goals of ACL surgery and understand the mechanisms of ACL injury
- Recognize the history of ACL repairs and how the Accelerated Rehab protocol has changed the rehab outcome
- Differentiate between types of grafts, pros/cons, specific graft goals
- Identify postoperative rehab goals, leg control issues, gait pattern issues, and education in extension habits
- Recognize criteria to be released to home following surgery
- Identify specific postoperative ACL rehab protocols
- Recognize the components of a success ACL rehab program from day of surgery to return to sport
- Recognize ACL studies on subsequent injury rates, ACL graft tear rates, correlation of time of return to sport and subsequent tear
- Identify the reasons why pain control is so important in ACL surgery and the subsequent historical pros/cons for narcotics
- Identify a non-opioid pain management protocol for ACL surgery and recognize its importance in a successful rehab program
Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:
A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
