Course Description:

These courses derived from the text Assistive Technologies, offer the latest clinical information needed to master assistive strategies, make confident clinical decisions, and help improve the quality of life for people with disabilities. Based on the Human Activity Assistive Technology (HAAT) model, Assistive Technologies: Principles and Practice, 4th Edition provides detailed coverage of the broad range of devices, services, and practices that comprise assistive technology, and focuses on the relationship between the human user and the assisted activity within specific contexts. These courses feature coverage of new ethical issues, more explicit applications of the HAAT model, and a variety of global issues highlighting technology applications and service delivery in developing countries.

Course Goals and Objectives:

At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Define the Ethical Context
  2. Identify the five principles of fidelity
  3. Recognize the Principles of Distributive Justice
  4. Recognize the advantages/disadvantages for trading autonomy and independence for security and privacy
  5. Identify artificial intelligence in assistive technology applications
  6. Recognize the five principles of AT service delivery
  7. Identify the ethical standards in AT service delivery
  8. Differentiate between the steps in the AT delivery process
  9. Recognize common assistive device characteristics
  10. Recognize training strategies for the implementation of assistive technology
  11. Identify sources of funding for assistive technology
  12. Differentiate between the elements of the Human/Technology Interface (HTI)
  13. Differentiate between advantages/disadvantages to many different AT systems available
  14. Recognize skill development and training programs for new AT use

Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:

A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
