This course is derived from the textbook Differential Diagnosis for Physical Therapists by Catherine Goodman, MBA, PT, CBP and Teresa Snyder, MN, RN, OCN, CS. Following the standards for competency established by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) related to conducting a screening examination, Differential Diagnosis for Physical Therapists, 5th Edition gives you a consistent way to screen for systemic diseases and medical conditions that can mimic neuromuscular and musculoskeletal problems. This comprehensive text centers on a 5-step screening model that covers past medical history, risk factor assessment, clinical presentation, associated signs and symptoms, and review of symptoms for each client.

This course covers chapters 6,9 and 10:

  • Chapter 6: Screening for Cardiovascular Disease
  • Chapter 9: Screening for Hepatic and Biliary Disease
  • Chapter 10: Screening for Urogenital Disease

At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Differentiate between signs and symptoms of cardiovascular diseases
  2. Recognize conditions affecting the heart muscle
  3. Recognize the types of anginal pain
  4. List signs symptoms of a heart attack in men and women
  5. Identify signs and symtpoms of an aneursym
  6. Recognize conditions affecting the cardiac nervous system
  7. Identify risk factors for hypertension
  8. Recognize normal/abnormal cardiovascular laboratory results and resulting conditions
  9. Identify clues to screening for cardiovascular signs and symptoms
  10. Differentiate between hepatic and biliary signs and symptoms/diseases
  11. Identify hepatic referred pain patterns
  12. Recognize neurologic symptoms of liver dysfunction
  13. Differentiate between types of viral hepatitis
  14. Identify the signs and symptoms of cirrhosis
  15. Identify the guidelines to physician referral
  16. Identify the signs and symptoms of renal and urological disorders
  17. Recognize the extraurologic conditions that cause urinary tract symptoms
  18. Differentiate between types of urinary tract obstructions
  19. Identify the risk factors for urinary incontinence
  20. Differentiate between the stages of testicular cancer

Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:

A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
