Course Description:

This course is derived from the textbook Differential Diagnosis for Physical Therapists by Catherine Goodman, MBA, PT, CBP and Teresa Snyder, MN, RN, OCN, CS. Following the standards for competency established by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) related to conducting a screening examination, Differential Diagnosis for Physical Therapists, 5th Edition gives you a consistent way to screen for systemic diseases and medical conditions that can mimic neuromuscular and musculoskeletal problems. This comprehensive text centers on a 5-step screening model that covers past medical history, risk factor assessment, clinical presentation, associated signs and symptoms, and review of symptoms for each client.

This course covers chapters 7, 8, and 12:

  • Chapter 7: Screening for Pulmonary Disease
  • Chapter 8: Screening for Gastrointestinal Disease
  • Chapter 12: Screening for Immunologic Disease

Course Goals and Objectives:

At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Differentiate between pulmonary disorders
  2. Recognize the signs and symptoms of pulmonary disorders
  3. Identify the most common sites for pulmonary pain
  4. Recognize breathing patterns for common pulmonary disorders
  5. Identify the risk factors for pneumonia
  6. List the parameters that reduce the likelihood of pulmonary embolism
  7. Recognize the most clinically meaningful GI symptoms reported in the clinic
  8. Differentiate between relief measures for cardiac vs esophagitis pain
  9. List the signs of a gastrointestinal bleed
  10. Identify the causes of constipation and diarrhea
  11. Identify the most common cause of a psoas abscess
  12. Recognize the risk factors for NSAID-induced gastropathy
  13. Identify the signs and symptoms for common gastrointestinal disorders
  14. Recognize HIV transmission risks associated with individual populations
  15. List the clinical signs and symptoms of HIV/AIDS
  16. Differentiate between types of hypersensitivity
  17. Differentiate between types of autoimmune-mediated neurologic disorders
  18. Recognize the clinic appropriate tests to elicit signs and symptoms of Myastenia Gravis
  19. Recognize the guidelines for immediate medical attention
  20. Recognize the guidelines for physician referral

Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:

A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
