This course is derived from the textbook Differential Diagnosis for Physical Therapists by Catherine Goodman, MBA, PT, CBP and Teresa Snyder, MN, RN, OCN, CS. Following the standards for competency established by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) related to conducting a screening examination, Differential Diagnosis for Physical Therapists, 5th Edition gives you a consistent way to screen for systemic diseases and medical conditions that can mimic neuromuscular and musculoskeletal problems. This comprehensive text centers on a 5-step screening model that covers past medical history, risk factor assessment, clinical presentation, associated signs and symptoms, and review of symptoms for each client.

  • Chapter 13: Screening for Cancer

Course Goals and Objectives:

At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Differentiate between the signs and symptoms of endocrine disorders
  2. Identify the neuromusculoskeletal signs of endocrine disorders
  3. Identify the primary endocrine hormones
  4. Differentiate between hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism
  5. Identify the etiology and clinical signs and symptoms of type I and II diabetes
  6. Differentiate between types of insulin and their clinical advantages and disadvantages
  7. Recognize clinical symptoms of life-threatening glycemic states
  8. Differentiate the signs and symptoms of metabolic disorders
  9. Recognize current cancer statistics
  10. Identify modifiable and nonmodifiable cancer risks
  11. Recognize cancer prevention methods
  12. Identify pathways of cancer metastases
  13. Recognize early warning signs of cancer specific to therapists and the clinic setting
  14. Identify the clinical manifestations of malignancy
  15. Recognize exercise contraindicated laboratory values
  16. Identify cancers of the musculoskeletal system
  17. Recognize guidelines for immediate physician referral
  18. Identify clues to screening for cancer

Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:

A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
