Fine Motor Skills for School Based Therapy

Course Description:

This course is designed for school-based therapists and covers the fine motor and visual motor skills that affect students' ability to access the total school environment. Strategies, treatment interventions, and tools will be presented to improve students' function in academic-related tasks. The course also covers foundational skills needed to develop fine motor skills, grasp development, and visual motor integration skills, as well as specific interventions for handwriting, scissor skills, and sensory needs.
This course will cover:

• Identifying the fine motor and visual skills that affect students’ ability to access curriculum
• Describing treatment strategies to improve fine motor and visual motor/visual perception function of students, including handwriting intervention
• Building a “toolbox” of strategies and items to aid in therapy intervention

Course Instructor:

Lyndsey Baxley, MSOT, OTR/L

Lyndsey Baxley is a Board-Certified and Licensed Occupational Therapist currently serving as a school-based therapist in Alabama. She graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a master's in occupational therapy in December 2013. Lyndsey has worked in multiple settings including inpatient rehab/acute care with adults, early intervention, outpatient pediatrics, and most recently the school system. Prior to her MSOT, she earned her bachelor's in biology from Huntingdon College. Lyndsey also serves her community as the secretary of her city's Parks and Recreation board, where she advocates for accessibility and opportunities in leisure and recreation across the lifespan.

Course Goals and Objectives:

At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

1. Classify areas of deficit/function that a school-based therapist can address and differentiate between school-based areas of focus
2. Analyze foundational skills needed for fine motor control and differentiate between visual motor integration interventions
3. Categorize sensorimotor interventions and how to apply them in the school-based setting
4. Categorize visual motor/visual perception skills and how to apply them in the school-based setting
5. Categorize oculomotor skills and how to apply them in the school-based setting
6. Classify handwriting interventions and the appropriate ways to apply them and differentiate between sensory activities that promote visual motor/fine motor skills
7. Categorize items to create a “toolbox” for use in a school-based setting and how to apply the items as interventions
8. Organize a rehabilitation program that utilizes foundational skills to develop fine motor skills, grasp development, and visual motor integration skills to meet the student's academic goals in the classroom and leisure goals at play

Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:

A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
