Course Description:
Understanding the functional foot and ankle can help give a rehabilitation program a good “leg to stand on”! Seriously, we all know that rehabilitation stability starts from the ground up. Whether our patients' goals are to return to competitive sports or to meet occupational and leisure goals, it is essential to understand the role that the foot and ankle play. In this course, Dr. Dimaio will cover:
- Recognition and awareness of pertinent anatomy, kinesiology, and common pathologies
- Understanding the functional impact of foot/ankle complex pathology
- Understanding of the gait cycle as it relates to the foot/ankle associated movement and force requirements
- Specific techniques for taping the foot and ankle
- Understanding the role of orthotics and footwear and their appropriate use
- Treatment progressions for the foot and ankle to allow patients to meet their desired goals

Dr. Anthony Dimaio Jr., PT, DPT, Cert DN
Dr. Anthony Dimaio Jr. is a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy with over 11 years of clinical experience. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from West Virginia University in 2010 with a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology with an emphasis in Aquatic Therapy and subsequently earned his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from WVU in 2013. Dr. Dimaio has held leadership roles throughout his career, including serving as a Clinical Instructor, senior Physical Therapist, clinic manager, and currently as the Director of Physical Therapy at Family Foot and Leg Center in Naples, FL.
Specializing in foot and ankle rehabilitation, Dr. Dimaio has dedicated the past 9 years to treating patients alongside podiatric surgeons, accumulating approximately 2,000 hours annually in this highly focused setting. His expertise encompasses outpatient orthopedics, inpatient care, and skilled nursing. He is also certified in Dry Needling (Cert DN) and is the creator of the evidence-based CEU course, "Functional Foot and Ankle: Anatomy, Pathology, and Treatment." This course reflects his experience and passion for advancing clinical knowledge in foot and ankle rehabilitation.

Course Goals and Objectives:
At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:
- Differentiate between and identify pertinent anatomy, kinesiology and common pathologies in the foot/ankle complex
- Classify the functional impact and importance of foot/ankle pathology
- Identify basic understanding of the gait cycle as it relates to the foot/ankle and associated movement and force requirements, as well as the impact on foot/ankle function and pathology
- Recognize appropriate hand placement, technique, and grading of demonstrated mobilizations for the foot/ankle complex
- Differentiate between common gait faults and associated problems
- Recognize capacity versus demand and the subsequent impact it has on injuries
- Identify specific techniques for taping of the foot and ankle
- Recognize the role of footwear and orthotics and demonstrate appropriate usage
- Organize a rehabilitation program that utilizes structured progressions for the foot and ankle
Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:
A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
