This course utilizes the text from Orthopedic Physical Assessment, by David J. Magee, PhD, BPT. The author offers a systematic approach to performing a neuromusculoskeletal/orthopedic assessment with rationales for various aspects of the assessment. This comprehensive course is complete with extensive use of tables, full color pictures of special tests, reliability and validity of many of the special tests, and radiographic highlights.

Course Goals and Objectives:

At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the phases of the gait cycle
  2. Differentiate between single-leg and double-leg stance
  3. Recognize gait descriptors or parameters to watch for when observing gait
  4. Identify muscle actions during the gait cycle
  5. Identify the 3 reasons gait deviations occur
  6. Recognize gait deviations at the hip/pelvis/trunk
  7. Recognize gait deviations at the knee
  8. Recognize gait deviations at the ankle/foot
  9. Differentiate between diagnoses of nonantalgic limp
  10. Identify common gait pathologies
  11. Recognize normal postural development
  12. Identify the causes of increased Lordosis
  13. Recognize changes associated with Swayback
  14. Identify the prevalence of idiopathic scoliosis
  15. Recognize the three body types
  16. Identify body segment/line of gravity/observations in the standing posture- anterior view
  17. Recognize anterior malalignments
  18. Recognize lateral malalignments
  19. Identify body segment/line of gravity/observations in the standing posture- posterior view
  20. Recognize postural malalignments from the anterior and posterior skyline view 

Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:

A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
