Course Description:

This course is derived from the textbook by Andrew A. Guccione, PT, PhD, DPT, FAPTA, Rita A. Wong, PT, EdD, and Dale Avers, PT, DPT, PhD.  Geriatric Physical Therapy offers a comprehensive presentation of geriatric physical therapy science and practice. Thoroughly revised and updated editors Andrew Guccione, Rita Wong, and Dale Avers and their contributors provide current information on aging-related changes in function, the impact of these changes on patient examination and evaluation, and intervention approaches that maximize optimal aging. Chapters emphasize evidence-based content that clinicians can use throughout the patient management process.

Module 10: Special Populations and the Continuum of Care- Part 2 covers chapters 27 through 29.

Course Goals and Objectives:

At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Recognize the physiological process of dying
  2. Differentiate between hospice vs. palliative care
  3. Identify models of therapy practice in hospice and palliative care
  4. Recognize clinical issues-considerations for care
  5. Identify pain and symptom management
  6. Define palliative sedation
  7. Recognize advance directives: planning ahead for death with dignity
  8. Define aging and identify physical changes specific to the senior athlete
  9. Identify the Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA)
  10. Identify sport-specific rehabilitation approaches for common senior sports
  11. Identify demographics of older adults with developmental disabilities
  12. Recognize the developmental disabilities service system
  13. Identify age-related health care issues specific to adults with developmental disabilities
  14. Recognize proper program planning techniques and implementation for the older adult with developmental disabilities

 Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:

A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
