Course Description:

This course is derived from the textbook by Andrew A. Guccione, PT, PhD, DPT, FAPTA, Rita A. Wong, PT, EdD, and Dale Avers, PT, DPT, PhD.  Geriatric Physical Therapy offers a comprehensive presentation of geriatric physical therapy science and practice. Thoroughly revised and updated editors Andrew Guccione, Rita Wong, and Dale Avers and their contributors provide current information on aging-related changes in function, the impact of these changes on patient examination and evaluation, and intervention approaches that maximize optimal aging. Chapters emphasize evidence-based content that clinicians can use throughout the patient management process.

Course Goals and Objectives:

At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. List factors influencing aerobic capacity in the older adult
  2. Identify public health benefits of exercise and physical activity
  3. Recognize the physiology of aerobic capacity and exercise
  4. Identify a comprehensive examination on an older adult with impaired aerobic capacity
  5.  how to evaluate, diagnosis, and determine the prognosis of an older adult with impaired aerobic capacity
  6. Identify a plan of care/interventions for an older adult with impaired aerobic capacity
  7. Recognize components of how to evaluate and diagnosis an older adult with joint mobility issues
  8. Recognize interventions for an older adult with joint mobility issues
  9. Identify outcomes related to joint mobility issues in the older adult
  10. Identify the consequences of sarcopenia
  11. Identify muscle countermeasures for older adults
  12. Identify common motor control impairments in the older adult
  13. Recognize a thorough examination of an older adult with impaired motor control
  14. Identify a plan of care/interventions for an older adult with impaired motor control

 Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:

A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
