Course Description:

This course is derived from the textbook by Andrew A. Guccione, PT, PhD, DPT, FAPTA, Rita A. Wong, PT, EdD, and Dale Avers, PT, DPT, PhD.  Geriatric Physical Therapy offers a comprehensive presentation of geriatric physical therapy science and practice. Thoroughly revised and updated editors Andrew Guccione, Rita Wong, and Dale Avers and their contributors provide current information on aging-related changes in function, the impact of these changes on patient examination and evaluation, and intervention approaches that maximize optimal aging. Chapters emphasize evidence-based content that clinicians can use throughout the patient management process.

Module 7: Special Problems and Interventions- Part 1 covers chapters 19 through 20.

Course Goals and Objectives:

At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. List normal age-related changes in the skin
  2. Recognize the stages of the wound healing process
  3. Identify the role of the therapist in the wound care team across settings
  4. Recognize skin tears
  5. Recognize pressure ulcers
  6. Differentiate between venous insufficiency ulcers and arterial wounds
  7. Identify diabetic neuropathic ulcers
  8. Understand the examination and evaluation of skin and wounds in older adults
  9. Identify pressure relief options and compression therapy
  10. Identify appropriate wound dressing products
  11. Identify surgical interventions for wound closure
  12. Identify physical agents for wound healing
  13. Identify the pathophysiology and risk factors for urinary incontinence and interventions to combat these risk factors

Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:

A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
