Course Description:

This course utilizes the text from Muscle Energy Techniques, by Leon Chaitow, ND, DO.  Muscle Energy Techniques sets out clear, practical and clinical guidelines for all students and practitioners wishing to use MET techniques as part of their patient management. These modules present the full array of modern METs and their usage in a variety of acute, chronic and rehabilitation settings. 

Module 1:  Intro & How to Use MET covers:

  • Chapter 1: Muscle Energy Techniques
  • Chapter 2: The history of Muscle Energy Technique
  • Chapter 3: MET: efficacy and research
  • Chapter 4: How to use MET

Target Audience:

Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapist Assistants and Athletic Trainers.

Course Goals and Objectives:

At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Recognize components of Muscle Energy Technique (MET)
  2. Differentiate between the STAR and TART assessments
  3. Differentiate between MET approaches
  4. Recognize patterns of muscle imbalance
  5. Identify viscoelastic properties in relation to MET and stretching
  6. List effects of pelvic imbalances according to MET history
  7. Recognize the purpose of Rapid Rhythmic Resistive Duction
  8. Differentiate between MET and Postisometric Relaxation (PIR)
  9. Identify types of manual procedures for MET and PNF isometric contaction-assisted stretching techniques
  10. Identify the "Rational Sequence of Management"
  11. Differentiate between types of end-feel
  12. Recognize possible patient errors during MET
  13. Recognize possible practitioner errors during MET
  14. Identify the importance of breathing assistance with MET
  15. Differentiate between grades of muscle contractions
  16. Recognize the importance of self-treatment
  17. Identify when MET should be applied to a muscle 

Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:

A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
