Course Description:

This course utilizes the text from Muscle Energy Techniques, by Leon Chaitow, ND, DO.  Muscle Energy Techniques sets out clear, practical and clinical guidelines for all students and practitioners wishing to use MET techniques as part of their patient management. These modules present the full array of modern METs and their usage in a variety of acute, chronic and rehabilitation settings. 

Module 2: MET for Postural Muscles & Myofascial Pain covers:

  • Chapter 5: Sequential assessment & MET treatment of main postural muscles
  • Chapter 10: MET in a massage therapy setting
  • Chapter 12: Integrated neuromuscular inhibition technique (INIT) and myofascial pain

Target Audience:

Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapist Assistants and Athletic Trainers.

Course Goals and Objectives:

At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify objectives of manual treatment
  2. Differentiate between acute and chronic muscles barriers
  3. Recognize assessment strategies and MET treatment of postural muscles
  4. Differentiate between MET approaches
  5. Recognize common patterns of muscle imbalance
  6. List the differences between working and resting muscles
  7. Recognize the different methods of MET treatment for the lower extremity
  8. Identify specific parameters in successful MET treatment
  9. Identify red flags to MET treatment
  10. Recognize uses of MET in therapeutic massage
  11. Identify STAR palpation methods of locating trigger points
  12. Recognize types of trigger point treatment methods 

Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:

A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
