Course Description:
This course is derived from the textbook Occupational Therapy for Children by Jane Case-Smith, EdD, OTR/L, FAOTA and Jane Clifford O'Brien, PhD, OTR/L. Occupational Therapy for Children focuses on children from infancy to adolescence and gives comprehensive coverage of both conditions and treatment techniques in all settings. The course includes author contributions, new research and theories, new techniques, and current trends to keep the therapist in step with the changes in pediatric OT practice. The text provides a strong focus on evidence-based practice with the addition of key research notes and explanations of the evidentiary basis for specific interventions.

Course Goals and Objectives:
At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:
1. Identify the roles of the occupational therapist in feeding intervention
2. Recognize the functions of oral structures in feeding
3. Recognize the developmental sequence of eating skills
4. Differentiate between the stages of developmental continuum in self-feeding
5. Recognize medical conditions that affect eating
6. List guiding questions to evaluate the contexts for feeding
7. Recognize interventions for sensory problems
8. List foods indicated and contraindicated for children with immature oral-motor skills
9. Identify oral structural anomalies
10. Identify benefits of active participation in activities of daily living
11. Recognize instruments for assessing ADL performance in children and adolescents
12. Identify intervention approaches to improve performance of ADL skills
13. Recognize typical adaptation principles used with children and adolescents with disabilities
14. Recognize anticipatory problem solving
15. List adaptation strategies for dressing with different types of garments
Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:
