This course is derived from the textbook by Jeffrey Placzek, MD, PT and David Boyce, PT, EdD, OCS.  This textbook is part of the popular Secrets series.  It presents physical therapy concepts and then introduces different healing modalities, specialties and orthopedic procedures typically prescribed for common injuries such as shoulders and extremities.  Common diseases are included as well as more innovative diagnostic tools for physical therapists such as radiology.  The text features concise information that includes tips, and memory “secrets”.  Bulleted lists, algorithms and illustrations provide a quick review of the specific topics discussed.  The information is interesting, entirely evidence-based, outcome based and up-to-date.

Course Goals and Objectives:

At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the normal ranges of motion of each section of the spine
  2. Recognize lumbar pressures commonly used in exercises and postures and why it is important
  3. Describe the articular receptor distribution in the spine
  4. Differentiate between the classic presentation of disc herniations at various levels
  5. Differentiate between lumbar spinal stenosis classifications
  6. Identify the differential diagnosis of lumbar stenosis
  7. Recognize the grades of Spondylolisthesis
  8. Identify how Spondylolisthesis is diagnosed radiogaphically
  9. Identify the King classification system for idiopathic scoliosis
  10. Recognize the surgical indications for scoliosis
  11. Identify possible complications of surgical scoliosis intervention
  12. Recognize the typical pattern of movement and positional dysfunction for the thoracic spine
  13. Differentiate between spinal cord injury syndromes
  14. Recognize a Hangman's fracture
  15. Identify clinical symptoms of TMJ and subsequent treatment strategies

Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:

A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
