Course Description:

“Physical Therapy Ethics” was designed to help therapy professionals with the ethical dilemmas they face in the workplace.  The course is designed to promote a better understanding of ethics, morals, and legal behavior to facilitate a better decision-making process for professionals in ethical situations.  The information also includes the APTA Code of Ethics, the Standards of Ethical Conduct for the Physical Therapist Assistant, the APTA Guide for Professional Conduct, the APTA Guide for Conduct of the Physical Therapist Assistant, and sections of the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy Jurisdictional Licensure Reference Guide. Lastly, multiple case studies are provided to help identify appropriate ethical responses/actions to specific situations.

This course will cover:

  • Compare & contrast the definitions of ethics, morals, and law
  • Apply the primary bioethical pillars of medicine
  • Cite and support the Code of Ethics
  • Examine common infringements of ethical standards in clinical settings
  • Assess your clinical decision-making based on the standards of medical ethics

Course Instructor:

Dr John Jowers, PT, DPT, SCS, CSCS

Dr. John Jowers, PT, DPT, SCS, CSCS, is a board-certified sports clinical specialist and certified strength and conditioning coach based in Rockville, Maryland. As the head physical therapist at Launch Physical Therapy and Fitness Coaching, he specializes in treating a wide range of musculoskeletal, neurologic, and systemic conditions, including running injuries, ACL reconstructions, hip labrum surgeries, and cervicogenic headaches, among many others. Dr. Jowers earned his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Maryland College Park. His treatment approach incorporates advanced techniques such as functional dry needling, spinal manipulation, and active release therapy, and he utilizes the latest medical research and technology to optimize patient outcomes. He teaches professionally on a variety of topics, including sarcopenia, proprioception, cardiac health, sleep optimization, and athletic training.

At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  2. Recognize the purpose of the Code of Ethics
  3. Differentiate between Biomedical Ethical Pillars
  4. Understand how to apply the Code of Ethics
  5. Identify and differentiate between the APTA Principles
  6. Recognize ethical professional conduct and how to apply it in clinical decision-making scenarios
  7. Differentiate between common infringements of ethical standards in clinical settings
  8. Identify medical ethics exceptions and identify resolutions from violations of codes of ethics
  9. Interpret and apply the APTA’s Guide for Professional Conduct for the Physical Therapist and the Physical Therapist Assistant
  10. Apply case studies to help identify appropriate ethical responses/actions to specific situations

Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:

A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
