What exactly IS Sarcopenia?? The quick and simple definition is: the gradual decline of muscle tissue with age.  This course will help you understand “who” sarcopenia affects.  You will become familiar with methods of testing patients and be able to identify risk factors for developing muscle atrophy. Then there is the age-old therapy question of “What’s the best way to treat Sarcopenia?”  Let Dr. John Jowers, PT, DPT, SCS, CSCS, help you utilize evidence-based methods to make therapeutic interventions in the most effective way possible.

Course Goals and Objectives:

At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the definition, characteristics and prevalence of Sarcopenia
  2. Recognize the types of evaluation for Sarcopenia
  3. Differentiate between the Pros/Cons for different methods of evaluation
  4. Differentiate between DEXA, Air Displacement (BodPod), Bioelectrical Impedance (BIA), CT and MRI, Physical Performance, and Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB)
  5. Identify the conceptual stages of Sarcopenia
  6. Recognize the proper exercise prescription (evidence-based) for Sarcopenia
  7. Differentiate between exercise principles and how they apply to treating Sarcopenia
  8. Identify the benefits of exercise for Sarcopenia
  9. Recognize Push/Pull exercises for proper exercise prescription
  10. Identify exercise prescription efficacy and the role that nutrition plays in treating Sarcopenia

Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:

A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
