Course Description:
This course provides exploration of the sensory systems, with a focus on how they relate to sensory processing and how therapy interventions can support individuals with sensory processing challenges. Course objectives include describing the function of each sensory system and explaining how sensory information is processed to inform behavior, learning, and daily functioning, individualized sensory strategies that promote self-regulation, reduce sensory overload, and enhance participation in activities, designing and monitoring sensory diets that include a variety of activities to aid the children you work with in sensory regulation, and setting up and utilizing sensory rooms, including selecting appropriate tools and activities to address individual sensory needs. This course was created for professionals looking to expand their understanding of sensory processing and enhance their therapeutic skills in addressing sensory-related challenges. It can also serve as a great resource for those looking to apply sensory specific techniques in more customized and effective ways for individuals with diverse needs.

Lyndsey Weber Baxley, OTR/L
Lyndsey Baxley is a Board-Certified and Licensed Occupational Therapist currently serving as a school-based therapist in Alabama. She graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a master’s in occupational therapy in December 2013. Lyndsey has worked in multiple settings including inpatient rehab/acute care with adults, early intervention, outpatient pediatrics, and most recently school system. Prior to her MSOT, she earned her bachelor’s in biology from Huntingdon College. Lyndsey also serves her community as the secretary of her city's Parks and Recreation board where she advocates for accessibility and opportunities in leisure and recreation across the lifespan.

Course Goals and Objectives:
At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:
- Identify the sensory systems and their roles in daily life
- Recognize the visual system, oculomotor skills, visual perception skills and differentiate between disruptions and effective interventions
- Identify auditory system disruptions and interventions and organize them into an effective rehabilitation program
- Recognize the olfactory system, disruptions and interventions and compare to the gustatory system, disruptions and interventions
- Differentiate between the roles of the tactile system, disruptions and interventions and differentiate between the proprioception system, disruptions and interventions
- Recognize interoception and the issues in which disruption can occur in daily life
- Organize creating a sensory diet and differentiating between interventions to move or to calm
- Identify the benefits of a sensory space
- Organize a rehabilitation program that focuses on sensory systems interventions and allows the patient to meet educational and leisure goals
Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:
A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
