Course Description:

This course is derived from the textbook by Glen Gillen “Stroke Rehabilitation: A Function-Based Approach 2nd Edition". This detailed text combines aspects of background medical information, a comprehensive review of standardized and non-standardized evaluation procedures and assessments, treatment techniques and evidence based interventions. 

Module 2: Covers chapters 7, 8, 9, 14, and 15.

Course Goals and Objectives:

At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Understand the functional anatomy of the trunk
  2. Understand the control requirements for various movement patterns and activities
  3. By activity analysis, understand key components of trunk control required for independence in various activities of daily living
  4. Understand treatment activities to improve and compensate for loss of trunk control
  5. Identify the systems involved in balance, and review the assessment and evaluation of component balance skills and balance during functional activity
  6. List examples of treatment plans and ideas based on specific balance dysfunctions to allow the therapist to implement focused intervention
  7. Understand the development of goals and documentation systems with emphasis on the setting for service delivery and the effect of the current health care environment
  8. Understand key components of the anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system
  9. Understand stroke syndromes that are associated with vestibular signs and symptoms
  10. Understand general concepts of vestibular rehabilitation
  11. Recognize the impact of impairment on mobility tasks
  12. Identify specific movement patterns observed during mobility tasks and common compensatory strategies
  13. Recognize a function-based approach to retraining mobility patterns
  14. Understand the impact of environmental changes on mobility tasks
  15. Understand normal gait components
  16. Identify common gait deviations after a cerebrovascular accident
  17. Understand the basics of gait training
  18. Identify and describe commonly used orthoses and assistive devices

Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:

A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
