Course Description:

This course is derived from the textbook by Glen Gillen “Stroke Rehabilitation: A Function-Based Approach 2nd Edition”. This detailed text combines aspects of background medical information, a comprehensive review of standardized and non-standardized evaluation procedures and assessments, treatment techniques and evidence based interventions.

  • Chapter 18: Impact of Neurobehavioral Deficits on Activities of Daily Living
  • Chapter 19: Treatment of Cognitive-Perceptual Deficits: A Function-Based Approach
  • Chapter 20: Enhancing Engagement in Instrumental Activities of Daily Living

Course Goals and Objectives:

At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Define clinical reasoning, and identify and define the main forms of clinical reasoning.
  2. Understand the differences between a more phenomenological approach versus a more biomechanical approach to patient care
  3. Recognize how an understanding of clinical reasoning can enhance practice in the area of cognitive and perceptual dysfunction with patients following stroke
  4. List examples of situations in which a therapist might use procedural, interactive, conditional, and pragmatic reasoning
  5. List the five stage in the development of expertise and the key features of each phase
  6. Identify a relationship between neurobehavioral concepts and activity performance
  7. Recognize the theory on which the Arnadottir OT-ADL Neurobehavioral Evaluation (A-ONE) is based as a structure for clinical observations of stroke patients   
  8. Identify conceptual and operational definitions for neurobehavioral impairments and disability
  9. Identify clinical reasoning skills based on the A-ONE theory for hypothesis testing
  10. Relate the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health and the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework to the A-ONE theory and neurobehavioral concepts
  11. List examples of how strokes can cause different patterns of impairments affecting task performance
  12. Understand the different approaches to treatment of cognitive and perceptual (processing) impairments and be aware of research conducted on each approach.
  13. Recognize the importance of context, psychosocial issues, and meaningful activity in treatment planning for this population
  14. Identify the multicontextual and Affolter approaches to treatment of processing impairment
  15. Identify the relevance and importance of occupation-based activities in the treatment of cognitive and perceptual impairments
  16. Understand the concept of instrumental activities of daily living
  17. Recognize the effect of a stroke on a person’s engagement in instrumental activities of daily living
  18. Understand the relationship between the degree of impairment and engagement in instrumental activities of daily living and implications for evaluation and intervention
  19. Identify the occupational therapy evaluation process for enhancing engagement in instrumental activities of daily living
  20. Identify the basics of goal writing for performance of instrumental activities of daily living
  21. Understand the adaptive approach to occupational therapy intervention for instrumental activities of daily living intervention            

Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:

A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
