This course is derived from the textbook by Glen Gillen “Stroke Rehabilitation: A Function-Based Approach 2nd Edition”. This detailed text combines aspects of background medical information, a comprehensive review of standardized and non-standardized evaluation procedures and assessments, treatment techniques and evidence based interventions.

Course Goals and Objectives:

 At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Define driving as an instrumental activity of daily living
  2. Identify the role of occupational therapy in addressing driving issues at different stages of rehabilitation and recovery for the stroke survivor
  3. Understand the legal issues associated with involvement of driving issues and how to reduce liability exposure
  4. Identify performance deficits related to a cerebrovascular accident that can interfere with driving skills
  5. Understand the current accepted practice for a comprehensive driver assessment for the stroke survivor
  6. Identify resources for information, education, and referral
  7. Identify the normal anatomy and physiology of the swallowing mechanism
  8. Identify the effects of stroke on the swallowing mechanism
  9. Understand clinical and instrumental evaluation of dysphagia following stroke
  10. Recognize various rehabilitative and compensatory techniques used to treat after a stroke
  11. Identify the efficacy of dysphagia intervention following stroke
  12. Identify and describe the normal human sexual response cycle and the changes that occur during the aging process
  13. Understand the effects of stroke on sexual function
  14. Identify the occupational therapist’s role in sexuality intervention
  15. Understand and apply the levels of the PLISSIT model that are appropriate for occupational therapists
  16. Identify sexual impairments and how they affect function
  17. List treatment interventions for impairments affecting sexual function
  18. Understand the seating system and mobility base evaluation process
  19. Appreciate the difference between seating for rest and seating for activity performance
  20. Identify a treatment plan and identify the goals of the mobility device and seating and positioning system
  21. Appreciate the pros and cons of different mobility bases and seating system components
  22. Understand the influence of the seating system on carryover of treatment goals
  23. Appreciate the importance of the team process throughout the evaluation and fitting/delivery process
  24. Understand the importance of fitting and training with the recommended seating system and mobility device
  25. Apply methods of assessing the home environment for barriers
  26. Understand architectural guidelines as established by the American Standards Institute
  27. Recognize methods for modifying the home environment and increase safety and mobility independence for patients recovering from cerebrovascular accident

Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:

A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
