Course Description:
Let’s just be honest…. if you aren’t a certified hand therapist, working with a pediatric hand patient can be intimidating. But maybe it doesn’t have to be out of your comfort zone. Dr. Aditi Mehra, DHS, OTR/L breaks down all aspects of the pediatric hand. Dr. Mehra will show you step-by-step how to do a thorough evaluation and set up effective intervention plans.
Dr. Mehra will cover:
- Anatomy and Physiology, including contextual factors and body functions influential in pediatric hand skill development
- Typical patterns and classification of fine motor skills development
- The component skills required to develop hand skills in children to perform ADLs
- Motor problems and other limiting factors that affect hand skill development
- Various standardized and non-standardized assessments to evaluate hand skills in children
- Research-based guidelines for intervention

At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:
- Differentiate between hand muscles and their subsequent function
- Recognize Somatosensory: Haptic Perceptual Skills
- Identify the Scheiman Model and the Cattell Horn Carroll Model and differentiate between types of visual analysis
- Identify the age-appropriate sequential development of in-hand manipulation
- Differentiate between Patterns of the Hand: The Big 6
- Identify the Classification for in hand manipulation skills including the 5 basic types of patterns
- Recognize the 5 Stages of Bilateral Coordination and underlying deficits that impact hand skills
- Identify tools and methods used in comprehensive evaluation of hand skills
- Recognize the proximal to distal plan of care
- Recognize specific hand skills needed for ADLs
Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:
A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
