Course Description:
According to the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, 70% of adults in the US have experienced some form of trauma – that’s 223.4 million people. How many of those people walk through our doors needing some sort of therapy? Do we ever consider how that trauma can impact their plan of care and what the most effective treatment would be for them? Dr. Aditi Mehra, DHS, OTR/L helps us understand and navigate Trauma Informed Care in therapy.
Dr. Mehra will cover:
- Identify basic principles of trauma and trauma-informed approaches
- Recognize the impact of trauma on the brain and human behavior
- Differentiate between research-based outcomes of trauma-informed approaches across practice settings
- Identify applications of trauma-informed approaches in therapy

Course Goals and Objectives:
At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:
- Differentiate between types of trauma
- Recognize the impact of trauma and how it can affect therapy
- Identify 3 streams of symptoms
- Identify what happens in the traumatized brain and how therapy treatment should adjust
- Differentiate between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system and recognize the 4 responses to a threat
- Differentiate between the 4 attachment styles: secure, avoidant, ambivalent and disorganized
- Identify trauma from addressing trauma and how it can affect therapists
- Differentiate ways to address and work through trauma: positive/delete traumatic memories, grounding yourself, horror movie metaphor, and FLOCK acronym
- Recognize 3 main tips to work with clients in hyper/hypo arousal
- Differentiate between SAMHSA Six Core Trauma-Informed Principles
Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:
A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
