Balance and Vestibular Training: Treating Dizziness, Falls and BPPV Symptoms

Course Description:

Dizziness interferes with the everyday activities of 30% of persons over the age of 70.
How many times have you received a script that simply read “dizziness”?
You think to yourself “Is it age related, medication related, inner ear issues, cranial nerve dysfunction, BPPV symptoms?” That is a lot of variables to weed through for an initial evaluation.  But to treat your patient efficiently and effectively, it must be done.
Mark Flinders, PT, ATC, SCS will guide you through the process of doing an effective eval and differentiating between causes and appropriate treatment. 
This course will help you:
-Recognize the characteristics/signs/symptoms of Benign Paroxysmal Positioning Vertigo (BPPV)
-Differentiate between types of testing
-Recognize the appropriate treatment

At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

1. Identify the parts of the inner ear anatomy
2. Recognize incidence/prevalence/etiology/basic statistics of dizziness and falls
3. Recognize characteristics of cervical vertigo/orthostatic hypotension/Meniere’s Disease
4. Differentiate the symptoms of a vestibular migraine
5. Recognize the characteristics/signs/symptoms of Benign Paroxysmal Positioning Vertigo (BPPV)
6. Differentiate between types of cranial nerve/balance testing-Smooth Pursuit/Saccades Horizontal/Saccades Vertical/Convergence/Horizontal Vestibular Ocular Reflex/Vertical Vestibular Ocular Reflex/Visual Motion Sensitivity/Modified Romberg Test/Alternate Romberg Test/Fukuda Test/Head Impulse Test/HINTS Test
7. Differentiate between types of BPPV testing – Dix-Hallpike Testing/Side-Lying Testing/Supine Roll Test/Bow & Lean Test/Horizontal Canal BPPV/Anterior Canal BPPV/Multiple Canal BPPV
8. Identify possible testing concerns
9. Differentiate between treatment maneuvers – Epley Maneuver/Semont Manuever/Lempert Maneuver/Tirelli Maneuver/Gufoni Maneuver/Brandt-Daroff
10. Recognize that BPPV is a benign disease

Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:

A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
