Course Description:

This course utilizes the text from Orthopedic Physical Assessment, by David J. Magee, PhD, BPT. The author offers a systematic approach to performing a neuromusculoskeletal assessment with rationales for various aspects of the assessment. This comprehensive course is complete with extensive use of tables, full color pictures of special tests, reliability and validity of many of the special tests, and radiographic highlights.

Course Goals and Objectives:

At the completion of this course, participants should be able to: 

  1. Recognize the closed packed position for the joints of the shoulder
  2. Identify specific muscle weaknesses caused by peripheral nerve injuries
  3. Recognize posterior view postural deformities
  4. Differentiate between the 3 types of glenohumeral painful arcs
  5. Recognize causes of scapular imbalance patterns
  6. Identify signs and symptoms of possible peripheral nerve involvement
  7. Recognize special tests commonly performed on the shoulder
  8. Differentiate between grades of anterior glenohumeral translation
  9. Recognize the proper procedures for performing tests for anterior and posterior shoulder instability
  10. Recognize the proper procedures for performing tests for inferior and multidirectional shoulder instability
  11. Recognize the proper procedures for performing tests for impingement and labral tears
  12. Differentiate between types of SLAP lesions
  13. Recognize the proper procedures for performing tests for scapular stability and ligament pathology
  14. Recognize the proper procedures for performing tests for muscle or tendon pathology
  15. Differentiate between the types of tests, and the proper performance, for thoracic outlet syndrome.
  16. Identify the pain referral pattern of the shoulder
  17. Recognize the uses for plain film radiography
  18. Differentiate between arthrography, ultrasonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and angiography. 

Criteria for Obtaining Continuing Education Credits:

A score of 70% or greater on the post-test
